How does it differ from Kingspan TP10/TF70

Kingspan K3 is a premium product. The whole K range or phenolic range produced by Kingspan is an upgrade on the standard PIR foam used in their other boards.
We believe that the K range is different in three areas.

1) Thermal Performance. In R value terms TP10 around 7-10% inferior
2) Fire rating, both class 1 but the phenolic range marginally better.
3) Compressive strength. K3 range being about 7% greater
4) However the K3 has a much lower vapour resistance and hence, unlike the TF70 it requires a DPM ( damp proof membrane).
So even if it is specified to you, what you have to ask is the extra expense justified?

The Facings

Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard is faced on both sides with a plain (coated) glass tissue autohesively bonded to the insulation core during manufacture.

The Core

The core of Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard is a premium performance CFC/HCFC–free rigid phenolic insulant of typical density 35 kg/m3.

CFC/HCFC–free

Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard is manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP).

Standard Dimensions 1200mm x 2400mm

Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard is readily available from us in the following standard thickness 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 75mm, 100mm. The following thicknesses are available upon special order ... 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 70mm, 80mm, and 90mm.

Compressive Strength

The compressive strength of Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard typically exceeds 150 kPa at 10% compression and 125 kPa at 5% when tested to BS EN 826: 1996 (Thermal insulating products for building applications. Determination of compression behaviour).

Water Vapour Resistance

Modified to include board facings, the boards achieve a resistance greater than 15 MNs/g when tested in accordance with BS 4370–2: 1993 (Methods of test for rigid cellular materials. Methods 7 to 9). Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard should always be installed over a separate damp proof membrane (minimum 1200 gauge).

Durability

If correctly applied, Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard has an indefinite life. Its durability depends on the supporting structure and the conditions of its use.

Resistance to Solvents, Fungi & Rodents

The insulation core is resistant to short–term contact with petrol and with most dilute acids, alkalis and mineral oils. However, it is recommended that any spills be cleaned off fully before the boards are installed.

Ensure that safe methods of cleaning are used, as recommended by the suppliers of the spilt liquid. The insulation core is not resistant to some solvent–based adhesive systems, particularly those containing methyl ethyl ketone. Adhesives containing such solvents should not be used in association with this product.

Damaged boards or boards that have been in contact with harsh solvents or acids should not be used. The insulation core and facings used in the manufacture of Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard resist attack by mould and microbial growth, and do not provide any food value to vermin.

Fire Performance

The rigid phenolic insulation core of Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard will achieve the results given below, which enable it to be classified by the Building Regulations as being Class 0 and as Low Risk by the Building Standards in Scotland.

The fire rating of Kingspan Kooltherm® K3 Floorboard boards when subjected to British Standard fire tests, will vary, depending on the particular application.

Test - BS 476–6: 1989 (Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test for fire propagation for products) - Result - 1989 Index of performance (1) not exceeding 12 and sub Index (i1) not exceeding 6 (for rigid phenolic insulation core)

Test - BS 476–7: 1997 (Fire tests on building materials and structures. Method of test to determine the classification of the surface spread of flame of products - Result - Class 1 rating

Test - BS 5111–1: 1974 (Smoke Obscuration) - Result - < 5%

Suspended timber floor insulation

Fixing floppy quilt insulation between floor joists can be difficult. Insulating a suspended timber floor is made easy using Celotex Insulation cut to fit between joists.

The specification of insulation for ground floors is more complex than that for walls or roofs. This is because the mechanisms for heat flow are affected by the ratio of surface area to perimeter.

With a suspended timber floor, there is little choice but to install the insulation between the joists, but the thermal bridges created by the joists have to be considered.

Continuity of the insulation must be ensured by packing the spaces between the external walls and the joists with insulation. The void below an insulated suspended timber floor must be well ventilated. The insulation must be cut to fit tightly between the joists to prevent heat loss.
